🎭 Secure Your Wig for Performance
A common question in the drag community is how to keep a wig firmly in place from the first number to the final bow. Here is a compact guide covering everything you need.
1. Cap Preparation
Start with a clean, dry scalp. Flatten and pin your natural hair flat, then pull on a Wig Cap to create a smooth, grippy base. A well-fitted cap reduces movement before you even reach for any adhesive.
2. Adhesive Choice
Choose the right product for your skin type and show length:
-
Spirit Gum / Spirit Gum 30ml — a classic theatre adhesive, ideal for lace fronts along the hairline.
-
Mastix P — a professional-grade spirit gum well suited to longer or more physical performances.
Always do a patch test on your inner arm at least 24 hours before a show if you are new to any adhesive.
3. Pinning & Grip Methods
Your wig already has adjustable elastic straps and internal combs — use them. Anchor the combs into your pinned hair and tighten the straps for a snug fit. For extra security, add a Rubber Wig Grip band around your hairline before fitting the wig; it creates friction that helps prevent sliding without requiring additional adhesive.
3. Pre-Show Testing
Once the wig is fitted, do a full run-through of your most energetic moves — head rolls, dips, and turns — at least 15 minutes before you go on. This lets the adhesive fully set and reveals any pressure points you can correct before the audience arrives.
5. Safe Removal
Never pull a bonded wig off dry. Apply MME Spirit Gum Remover along the lace edge and allow it to work for a few seconds before gently lifting. This protects both your skin and the delicate lace on the wig.
